Discover Gives Students Cash for Good Grades

Students who make the grade can now earn more than just their parents’ approval. Discover Student Loans is offering college students a cash reward for getting good grades.

Select undergraduate and graduate students who take out student loans with Discover Student Loans will be eligible for the program, with gives scholars 1% of their total loan amount as a one-time cash reward when they get a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.

Who is eligible

To qualify, students must apply for a loan in the Undergraduate, Health Professions, Law, MBA or Graduate Student division and earn their 3.0 or better GPA during the academic term their loan covers. Students will receive their cash reward in the form of a check.

Danny Ray, president of Discover Student Loans, said that the program is in line with Discover’s philosophy of supporting and giving back to its customers. “We are offering an incentive and reward to students who study hard, earn good grades and make an investment in their future,” Ray explained. He stressed that Discover strives to help students understand the loan process, find scholarships and reward students for studying hard and achieving good grades.

Not just cash back credit cards

Though Discover is primarily known as the credit card company famous for spearheading the cash back rewards movement, they also offer other services, including banking services and student loans. These financial services are designed to be easily accessible and free of common fees and charges.

Discover Student Loans offer a no-fee option for folks returning to college, or going there for the first time. All loans come with no origination fee, no prepayment fee, no charge for late payments and no fee for returned payments. Costs including tuition, housing, books, and living expenses are covered by Discover Student Loans, as long as the educational institution certifies them as eligible school expenses.

Student credit cards

Discover also offers a no-annual-fee rewards credit card for students, Discover it for Students. This card gives 1% cash back on all purchases, 5% cash back on purchases in rotating categories that change each quarter, and comes with a low annual fee. Young people or others with limited credit history are eligible for the Discover it student credit card and can use it to build their credit history while earning cash back rewards.
