Costa Rica, Rome, And Vietnam Among Top Destinations For Travelers In 2018

[Friday, January 19th, 2018]

One of the best things about credit cards is being able to accrue frequent flyer miles and other travel perks, just by making purchases you’d be making anyway. And American Express, which offers many popular travel rewards credit cards, recently released a report on the most popular travel destinations for travelers looking forward to adventures in 2018.

Tom Stein, vice president of American Express Travel, said that in the coming year, “we see U.S. travelers expanding personal and global boundaries when they travel.” He said the findings showed “an increased interest in cultural discover, personal connections, inspiring destinations, and premium, rejuvenating travel experiences.”

Top destinations of those surveyed included Bali, Costa Rica, Dubai, London, Portugal, Rome, Tel Aviv, Vietnam, and Zurich. American Express reports that international travel bookings for the first quarter of 2018 are up 44%, and 25% of survey respondents said they wanted to travel so they could learn about history, art, and culture worldwide.

Seventy-two percent said they want to learn about different cultures, and 15% said they traveled last year specifically to immerse themselves in new languages and customs.

Travel goals and traveling in style

When asked about their travel goals for 2018, 57% of survey respondents said that “exploring a new destination they’ve never seen before” is their top priority. Forty-three percent said they want to find a hot local spot to eat, while 52% like getting lost and creating their own memories by accidentally discovering hidden spots to shop, eat, and drink. Forty-nine percent said they seek out “adventure and excitement” on their trips.

When travelling, people also prioritize luxury. Fifty-one percent of folks said that getting a seat upgrade on the plane was their most-desired surprise on a trip, while 41 percent said they’d rather have a hotel room upgrade. Twenty-four percent said they’d utilize airport lounges when flying. And 68% will fly first class or business class on their 2018 travels.

The American Express Tourism Outlook survey was conducted by RTi Research and was based on a sample of responses from 2,000 U.S. consumers who have traveled over the past year.
