American Express Now Accepted at Dollar General

Just in time for the holidays, Dollar General has announced they are now accepting American Express credit cards in all of their over 11,500 retail locations across 40 states nationwide.

As holiday shoppers stock up on bargains, they will be able to earn reward points on their American Express cash back or Membership Rewards eligible credit cards, or use American Express prepaid cards, such as Bluebird and Serve, at the register.

Amex not just for high-end stores anymore

American Express cards have historically been seen as a higher-end credit card that is accepted at luxury retailers and carried by people in a higher income bracket. That may be due to their legendary “Black Card,” the Centurion card, available by invitation only and with an annual fee of $2,500.

Their Platinum card is also a high-end credit card, with a $450 annual fee. However, they actually carry a wide variety of credit cards, including cash back cards, prepaid cards, small business cards, and cards with no annual fee.

DG Digital Coupons plus American Express

Shoppers can take advantage of Dollar General’s discount program, DG Digital Coupons, and double up the savings by using an American Express rewards credit card. DG Digital Coupons is a program that allows customers to access savings through their mobile phones. People can register for a DG Digital Coupons account online and have offers sent to them by email and text. Savings offers are added to their digital account and redeemed at the time of purchase.

Cards like American Express Serve, which is a reloadable prepaid card, can be used via smartphone as well, making for a double mobile payments and savings experience.

Holiday savings online and with credit card rewards

In addition to the many deep discounts being offered this holiday season, consumers can get even more money back when they use the right credit card to make their purchases. Card like Discover it, which give 5% cash back in rotating categories, are offering up to $75 back in rewards on online purchases and at department stores. Chase Freedom is giving 5% back on up to $1,500 in purchases at Zappos and Amazon.

When shopping for the holidays, using a credit card is a good way to earn rewards and keep track of spending. Now shoppers can take advantage of that when using their American Express cards at Dollar General as well.
