Knowing what credit card deals are out there for international travel

Throughout the different times during the life span of a person there will come an opportunity for them to apply for credit cards. Good credit cards and bad credit cards exist all over the place and what makes a credit card good or bad is usually going to be related to the use that you are looking to get out of it.

This is a very important principle to keep in mind because what you want to do with it ultimately decides what you want out of it and what you want out of it will decide whether a specific credit card is going to be good for you or not.

Let’s take the example of traveling abroad. This is something that everyone wants to do and yet at the same time is something that people really dislike in terms of the money it costs them. With the booming tourism industry worldwide and the increase in the pricing of many of the general services relating to that industry it often becomes difficult for a person to travel abroad on a regular basis.

And even after the vacation itself has been bought and paid for there is still the consideration of what happens once the person has actually gotten to their country of choice. They still need to spend money and in order to do that they need to figure out how they are going to take that money with them. Most people settle on one of three options; traveler’s cheques, good credit cards or debit/ATM cards.

Traveler’s Cheques

For the longest time from a purely historical standpoint these have been the go to item for people that have been traveling abroad. Regardless of the country to which they are traveling a person has often taken traveler’s cheques with them.

There are a number of different really good advantages that traveler’s cheques will have even over good credit cards and for this reason they continue to be one of the most popular forms of currency for traveling abroad. Let’s just spend a few minutes taking a look at some of the good points and bad points regarding traveler’s cheques.

The two biggest advantages to using traveler’s cheques are convenience and security. The convenience of traveler’s cheques simply is that you can carry them around with you and use them much in the same way that a person would be able to use cash. This in itself serves to make them very convenient in terms of both usage and transportation. In addition to the convenience factor there is also the security factor.

If the cheques are stolen then a simple call to the company that handles your traveler’s cheques will get them cancelled and you will not end up having to pay any particularly large amounts of money because of the stolen traveler’s cheques. This is a very good aspect for a form of currency to have if you want to take it abroad simply because it is so easy for something to happen when you are in unfamiliar territory.

When you consider all of the moving around and sight seeing that you are going to be doing during the course of a vacation it is very important for people to be aware that things can and often do happen during the course of a vacation.

With traveler’s cheques, it is very easy to be prepared. In addition many banks will only charge somewhere in the range of two percent to five percent in commission for cutting you a traveler’s cheque so they are a fairly economical option from this standpoint as well.

Now if traveler’s cheques were indeed only affected by the aspects mentioned above then there would be no reason to use any of the other options. However, traveler’s cheques are not perfect and they have some disadvantages that will make them a poor choice for different people depending on their specific situation. The biggest disadvantage to traveler’s cheques is exchange rates. It is a well known fact that all across the world traveler’s cheques have some of the worst currency exchange rates around.

Even bad credit cards not at all intended for travel will have comparable rates and good credit cards that a person has come across through a well-researched credit card search will, like typical ATM cards, absolutely blow traveler’s cheques out of the water in this area. In addition to the poor exchange rates, there is also the issue of versatility.

Versatility is low with traveler’s cheques and in many of the smaller, more rural areas these types of cheques will not be accepted and if you haven’t exchanged them at a bank previously and there are no banks nearby the situation can get extremely dicey.

Good Credit Card Deals

There are a number of different good credit cards out there for people looking to get a credit card for traveling and in recent years the use of credit cards as foreign currency has really grown and in today’s world almost matches the use of traveler’s cheques worldwide.

Good credit cards offer an alternative to traveler’s cheques that many people find attractive for different reasons. A good way to start to realize which one is right for you is to understand the difference not only in advantages but also in drawbacks offered both by traveler’s cheques and credit cards. In the case of the former that has already been alluded to above and this section will discuss those same concepts in the context of credit cards.

Good credit cards (and in most cases even bad credit cards) have the best foreign exchange rate around. This is because the credit card company has been looking for ways to make customers happier with their credit cards in ways that are likely to be low impact to their bottom line.

Since most customers at most take one vacation a year (and some don’t even take that much) it is very easy to see why this type of a policy is beneficial to the credit card holders in such a way as to not really impact any of the operations undertaken by the credit card company.

Whatever the reason, the important point to note is that the exchange rates will be absolutely spectacular with credit cards and for this reason and this reason alone many people gravitate towards using credit cards.

Another issue with credit cards is the issue of liability. According to the laws under which credit card companies must operate you can only be held responsible for up to $50 worth of fraud charges and because of that if you should lose your card during your travel a simple call to the credit card company will ensure that you do not lose anymore than that. This serves to give people peace of mind in a very big way.

Additionally, people can also use their credit card spending to earn credit card rewards if they are part of a program and this serves to allow them to start saving up for their next vacation while enjoying themselves on this vacation.

Credit cards, just like their traveler’s cheque companions, are not perfect either and this is why they are not universally used. It is important to remember that credit cards are still credit cards at the end of the day.

There are still concerns with running up a balance, spending money you do not have and additionally accruing interest on accounts that you fail to pay off because of your location outside of the country. It is important to be aware of all three of these as even good credit cards in the wrong hands can lead to absolute disaster.

In addition to the typical credit card portions of the disadvantage there are also concerns with things like international fees. Most multi-national credit card platforms are autonomous from each other in different countries and for that reason any transaction you enact in another country might carry an additional fee with it.

This can be true even for good credit cards and it is something to be aware of when you are deciding what you want to take with you on your vacation.

This is ultimately the question that people are going to want to ask themselves when deciding which form of currency they are going to take with them. It is a very valid question and unfortunately the answer that only be provided to you by you.

You need to understand where you are traveling not in terms of just the country but also the regions within the country and you also need to understand what your most immediate needs are for that traveling. At the end of the day it is very important that the forms of currency you take with you, whether good credit cards or traveler’s cheques or something else, is currency that allows you the most flexibility and ease of use given your specific situation.
