Credit card deals for students - a dangerous niche in the credit card market?

I bet most of us is either planning to go to college, already attend a university or planning financial part of our kids during his student life. Whether it's college or university, students face more or less the same problems over the period of two to five years. One of the most talked about things among students and parents concerns financial part of a student life. When it comes to tuition fees, some students are provided with enough funds to pay off their tuition bill, while others are forced to take student loans.

Whatever the source of funding is, students also require money for things such as stationary, books, food, entertainment and other expenses. Most of the parents realize that time spent at college or university is a good moment to teach students of independency. That being said, parents often forget to keep an eye and guide their kids in the beginning of their financial lives.

But it won't take long before the result will show itself in adult life. A lot of graduates have been spotted with debts they have no financial power to deal with. Certain debts total tens of thousand dollars. But it's not just the debt that is harmful. Students who find it difficult to repay their credit card debts throughout academic season end up damaging their credit score.

Now that the banks are spreading their products among all sorts of social groups, students find themselves bombarded with credit card deals even on campus. A lot of offers guarantee freebies when you sign up. This aggressive marketing has lead to nothing but problems to students who are not aware of how to proper manage their finances.

However, this does not essentially mean that one cannot take advantage of student credit cards. If managed properly, credit cards may prove to be useful. Although some card issuers tend to view students as a category of people who are least aware of credit cards, thus imposing hidden fees and charges, certain financial institutions are playing it fairly.

A lot of credit card issuers tend to exploit students' temptation to buy new things, such as CDs and DVDs, apparel and other merchandise. They offer discounts as well as reward programs to entice students.  It all sounds good, but in the end, students end up buying things they don't really need. When a student is offered a credit card with a few thousand dollars limit, chances are, he will max it out in a few weeks.

Seeing how students end up overusing their credit cards, banks require minimum information to sign up for a card. Some banks even dropped requirements such as annual income proof which has made credit cards even easier to access. But it's not just the banks that should be blamed. Students themselves often do not realize that there is no such thing as free and easy money. They treat credit cards as a source of easy cash and end up paying off only minimum monthly amounts. No wonder it sometimes takes 15 years to pay off the debt in full.

A student should be taught that credit cards are there for convenience and emergencies. When I say convenience, I don't mean paying for drinks at the bar or buying movie tickets. There are numerous online deals for books and other merchandise that can be used to save up some money when using credit cards.

A student should understand that the terms of his future financial life directly depend on actions that he or she takes during college or university. So, why not take some time and educate yourself on the subject and start treating money in responsible and mature way. At the end, you will do yourself a favor and enjoy lower mortgage and car loan rates much sooner.

I guess I am a very lucky person, because my parents taught me that I have to use my credit card in case of emergency, so I don't really pay for cloths or entertaning with my card. I have a tution, but I partly pay with my card, luckely, I do not have any problems! But I have many friends who are in big trouble, because they were so irresponsuble and used the card everywhere they went! I want to leave this message for parents, because to my mind, only a family can create a feeling of responsibility!
