In 1850 it was established as an express mail company and with the course of time it enjoyed the monopoly of providing express shipments all over New York. American Express became even more meaningful as it moved to the area of financial services and initiated the money order business already practiced at the US Post Office.

But it was the company's traveler's cheque launched in 1891 that established it as truly international. The American Express traveler's cheque allowed American citizens to go round the globe without having difficulties of obtaining cash. In its effort to make traveling easier and more comfortable, the company's Travel Division established its first travel agencies equipped with first travel charge cards. It was under the provision of American Express Chief Executive Officer Ralf Reed that the company made a final and a decisive move into the card business with 250,000 card issuance following.

The Gold and Platinum cards issued in 1966 and 1984 respectively, were the first charge cards offered to exclusive American Express customers by invitation. These products, designed primarily for wealthy customers with significant spending and excellent payment history, carried heavy annual fees and had to be paid in full each month. Its first credit card was Optima which appeared in 1987 and gave a start to the present-day prosperous business of credit cards most appreciated for promoting customer rewards (the Blue Card from American Express, as an example).

First AmEx products were notable mostly for the requirements to potential customers. Guaranteed approval was granted to successful businessmen with a long and excellent credit history who could afford paying high-sky annual fees and could wisely manage their high credit card limits.
